Tuesday, 9/25/2007-The Bering Sea

At about 10am we started transiting the Unimak Pass through the Aleutian Islands. The Aleutians are the chain of more than 300 small volcanic islands that form an arc in the Northern Pacific from Alaska almost to Russia. The islands extend about 1200 miles and are the westernmost part of the US. It is interesting to note that since the group of islands cross longitude 180, they are at the same time technically the easternmost part of the US. Now there is a piece of trivia that may come up someday in casual conversation. Our course is taking us into the Bering Sea just north of Dutch Harbor (home of The Deadliest Catch, Mitchel) and then west along the arc of the Aleutians toward the Kamchatka peninsula of Russia. Today we attended a talk about what makes comedy given by the comedian from last night’s show; listened to a Russian piano soloist and attended a class on genealogy.
